ART

By Reem Kanj / In collaboration with Louis Vuitton

It’s hard to consider all the beauty and design of Louis Vuitton and not synonymize it with art. Artistic and innovative elements are always being integrated into Louis Vuitton’s leather goods and accessories, like the ‘Twist’ lock on some of the more recent handbag designs.

A couple of weeks ago, I visited Louis Vuitton’s London Maison to view the Objets Nomade exhibition. A  collection of foldable furniture and travel accessories designed in collaboration with some of the industries up and coming and established names. The objects created pay homage to the House’s special orders of the past and will leave you yearning for a glamorous vacation somewhere in the wilderness to set up camp with all these fantastic creations.

Besides viewing Objets Nomade there are a number of exclusive Louis Vuitton trunks sourced from clients all over the world as well as a handful of heritage trunks selected from the patrimony archives in Paris. It’s absolutely fascinating and gives you a rich insight into the brands heritage and history. The Art of Travel exhibition closes on June 19th.

Probably one of my favourite pieces, the Marcatu is a ‘cabinet de voyage’, a foldaway, portable travel cabinet that uses recycled leather offcuts from the Louis Vuitton Haute Maroquinerie workshop in Asnières, near Paris.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

THE TRUNK BED

Louis Vuitton

Commissioned by 19th century Congo explorer, Pierre De Brazza had several custom made pieces of equipment for his trips, one of them being a foldable camp bed. He asked Louis Vuitton to make a bed for his travels and the company manufactured a case which, when opened and unfolded, would transform into a camp bed.
